Hello CAMRA South Okanagan Members!
Have you had a good summer so far? We have! While it’s sad to see summer go, we are looking forward to the fall, and the action-packed beer events this season brings! In the rest of the Province we have the Great Canadian Beer Festival happening September 8 and 9, the Whistler Beer Festival happening September 13-17, Hopscotch in Kelowna on September 22-23, Brewloops in Kamloops September 27-October 1, the BC Hop Fest in Abbotsford on September 30 and the Oliver Cask and Keg Fest on September 30. Plus we’re already seeing lots of great events coming up in October for BC Craft Beer Month and Oktoberfest.
Right here at home, we have our 2nd Annual CAMRA SO Home Brewing Competition on Saturday, September 16. Hosted at Square One Hop Growers, with prizes for the top 3 home brews, sponsored by Square One Hop Growers, Kelowna Brew Supplies and Trellis and Vine. Local home brewers will be going head to head to find out who has the best brew of them all! Wine Crush Market will be on site again this year with wood-fired pizzas and local coffee for purchase, to go with all that fresh, delicious beer!
Even though entrance is free, we are requesting that attendees reserve your tickets online through eventbrite.
From Penticton, there will be a shuttle by Grape Friends to and from the event. The shuttle will depart from Penticton at 1:30 and again at 2:00. There will be return shuttles at 5:30 and 6:00. Additional times will be added if there is enough demand. The shuttle is free of charge for CAMRA members and $10 for non-members. Pre-registration for the shuttle is mandatory and can be done on the eventbrite page.
Doors open at 2:00pm, and over the next four hours you will have the opportunity to try beer from each of the competing brewers, along with hop yard tours, harvester demos and more! Attendees will vote for their favourite beers, with the top three winning the People’s Choice Awards. In addition, we have a crack team of professional brewers attending from local breweries and they will be selecting their favourite for the Brewers’ Choice Award.
In other, local craft beer news we would like to congratulate Kettle River Brewing for finally receiving their lounge and patio licence. This has been in the works for quite some time, and they are having a party on Friday, August 25 to celebrate!
The Reel Peach Film Festival was held again this past Peachfest, and in the Liquid Libations category the Penticton Ale Trail video won first place (co-produced by our own Kim Lawton and the folks from the BC Ale Trail) and the Battle of the Beers video featuring local brews won second place, and fan favourite. Check them out, maybe you’ll recognize yourself in the background at one of the brewery locations!
The CAMRA SO website has been transitioned onto a new host, and so the plague of technical issues we were experiencing earlier this year should be solved! Please let us know if you experience any issues with our website going forward. Have a look at the most up-to-date membership benefits here. If you are travelling, be sure to take your CAMRA membership card and check out the membership benefits offered throughout the province.
Cheers! |
