| Hello CAMRA SO members! What a long and crazy road this has been since our last newsletter! It is a relief to see the COVID-19 curve is continuing to stay quite flat, thanks to everyone’s efforts. As we continue along Phase 2, we can begin to enjoy some of the activities and places we’ve missed, while still taking steps to stay safe as re-opening gets underway. Although large gatherings and events are still prohibited, we are delighted to provide you with some local updates and craft beer news, as well as a couple of upcoming COVID appropriate events.  CAMRA SO Kick off to summer with a beer at the beach – June 20CAMRA members are invited to a social event at Marina Way Park from 5 – 8 pm on Saturday, June 20th. Bring your favourite craft beer or craft cider and a chair. Enjoy catching up with other CAMRA SO members, in a socially distant way, in the great outdoors. Marina Way Park is by the Penticton Art Gallery and the Penticton Ikeda Japanese Garden. Check out the Facebook event here. If all goes well and CAMRA member Jon Cote (previously from Craft Corner Kitchen) has his new food truck ready in time, we’ll have an opportunity to purchase food from his new food truck – Eazy Eats Food from the Streets. We’ll provide an update on this in the Facebook event closer to the date. Come enjoy some awesome craft-beer related conversation and safe outdoor visits. Please plan a safe ride home. CAMRA Beer Education Sessions Thanks to everyone who joined our Zoom Beer Education meetings while we have been unable to meet in person. Our next dedicated Beer Education night will be held sometime in July, hopefully in person by then. At this time, it seems best to wait a bit longer to give the breweries time to ease in and figure out the best way to move forward before we can meet safely in person again. CAMRA Beer Education Zoom Session – June 29 Join us on Zoom for a craft beer meet-up online on June 29th at 6:30pm. Grab your favourite craft beers, login to Zoom and join us for a catch-up over a beer. Our education director, Michelle Gowing, will present a history of craft beer in Canada training during this Zoom call. Stay tuned for the Zoom link, which will be posted in the Facebook event. In the meantime, if you have any questions please email Michelle at education@camraso.ca.   As breweries, cideries, pubs and restaurants begin to re-open, let’s please choose to buy local to support them. We’ve checked in with our local CAMRA partner breweries, cideries and distilleries to help you know who’s open and when. Remember that COVID-19 re-opening requirements will reduce the number of patrons allowed, so you may want to call ahead in case there are line-ups. Bad Tattoo Brewing Normal business hours are now 11am – 10pm, 7 days a week. Cannery Brewing The doors at Cannery Brewing are open again, with taproom hours now Monday to Friday 12pm – 9 pm, Saturday & Sunday 11am – 9pm. Detonate Brewing The taproom is open Thursday to Sunday from 2pm – 7pm, and will likely be increasing hours soon. Pints, flights growlers etc. are available. Dominion Cider Currently open weekends 11am – 5pm for tastings, purchases and online order pickup. They’ll update again as things progress, perhaps end of June. Firehall Brewery Firehall Brewery in Oliver is open again. They are open from 3pm – 8pm daily, except closed on Mondays. They are not taking reservations yet and ask people to enter the Beer Shop door at the bottom of the outside stairs, and not through the patio, allowing the patio to function as the Beer Shop’s exit. Highway 97 Brewing The taproom at Highway 97 has re-opened. Their hours are Wednesday through Saturday 11am – 8pm, Sunday hours are 11am – 7pm and they are closed Monday & Tuesday. Howling Moon Cider Not yet open for tasting, but they are open 11am – 4pm for curbside pick-up all week. Simply order online and choose the FREE pick-up option. Legend Distilling The folks at this Naramata distillery advised they are still working on their re-opening plans, but hope to have news soon about re-opening around mid-June. Nomad Cider The plan at Nomad Cider is for tastings to re-start sometime in July. They are currently open to fill online orders from their web store; they will package and have your items available for pickup the same day. Old Order Distilling Effective June 6th, the interior tasting room and patio will be updated with COVID19 appropriate (2m spacing) and a max group size of 6 people. No tours of the distillery production area available at this time. Slackwater Brewing Current hours for consumption on premises are Monday to Thursday 3pm – 9pm, Friday and Saturday 12 noon – 10pm and Sunday 12 noon – 6pm. Daily for retail & off-sales from noon. Reservations are recommended as capacity is reduced to groups larger than 6 and tables are very limited. Tin Whistle Brewing There’s a new online shop available on the website, with curbside pick up service available every day except Sunday. After ordering online, let them know when you are outside and your order will be brought to you. Local delivery service is also available. Given our somewhat quieter lives, or maybe even if you’re looking for something to do on a rainy day, we searched for some beer-related TV inspiration to share with our members. BREWS BROTHERS – New on Netflix, this series is getting some good reviews, although it’s also been called “cheesy” by some critics. BREWLAND – Prime Video offers this 2018 documentary that’s a coming of age tale about the Craft Beer industry that’s growing at a seemingly unsustainable pace in an ever-changing environment. One where a simple question, “What is Craft Beer?” has a complex and emotional answer. THE BEER JESUS – Another Amazon Prime offering from America (2019) follows Greg Koch’s quest to build Stone Brewing Berlin. The “Decider” website offers a detailed review of this recent film. CHINGA TU PELO – This film is about 5 Rabbit Cerveceria, a Latin immigrant-owned craft brewery from Chicago, and their decision to stop brewing the Trump Hotel’s private label beer (“Trump’s Golden Ale”) after he announced he was running for president. Not only that, but they took things a step further and brewed a beer in protest (Chinga Tu Pelo), which roughly translates to “F— Your Hair” (hence the name of the film). Check it out on Prime Video. BREWMASTER – Douglas Tirola details the rise of craft beer’s popularity and follows two enthusiasts chasing their American brewing dreams. Featuring a litany of industry magnates like Garrett Oliver, Ray Daniels, Jim Koch, Sam Calagione, Rob Tod, John Kimmich, Jennifer Kimmich, and more. It’s a little difficult to follow, but it’s energetic and passionate. Available on Prime Video and Apple TV … view the trailer here. PRAY FOR SNOW is 10 Barrel’s (ABI-owned) high concept attempt at putting their lifestyle on display through the crucible of snowboarding, fun, and beer. It’s entertaining and worth a quick watch at 25 mins. THE IRISH PUB – This film is a tribute to the greatest institution in Irish society – the public house, or more specifically, the traditional Irish publicans who run them. The characters in this exceptionally endearing film all run and own pubs that have been in their families for generations and it is through their warmth, wit and wisdom that we gain an insight into the heart and soul of the Irish pub. Available on Netflix and Prime Video – view the trailer here. DRINKING BUDDIES – This movie focuses on characters Luke and Kate who are co-workers at a Chicago brewery, where they spend their days drinking and flirting. They’re perfect for each other, except that they’re both in relationships. This one has been out for a long time, but it’s a fun watch. It’s available on Netflix, Prime Video and Apple TV. GARRET OLIVER CRITIQUING BEER – The website Epicurious features this short video challenging beer expert Garrett Oliver, Brewmaster of Brooklyn Brewery, to guess which one of two beers is more expensive. Garrett breaks down pilsner, Belgian White, IPA, Munich Dark Lager, barrel-aged and fruit sour beers before making his guesses. It’s actually very entertaining and educational. CRAFT – A CALIFORNIA CRAFT BEER DOCUMENTARY – This YouTube documentary is a few years old now, but California has over a thousand breweries now, and has been the country’s leading light in great beer since 1960s. You should watch the full film when you have a chance…it should inspire you to go drink some great local beer. TALES FROM THE ALE TRAIL – This is a series available on YouTube or Amazon (12 episodes) – a high-energy, hilarious, hop-filled adventure centred around the mouth-watering craft beer world in Niagara and Hamilton. THE BEER HUNTER – A BBC series by Michael Jackson that has garnered a lot of praise and is available on YouTube. Penticton Beer Run – now postponed to June 2021We highlighted this event in our last newsletter, but like so many other events this popular 10K Beer Run has been postponed due to COVID 19. Organizers plan to re-schedule the event in June 2021.   Membership Benefit UpdateStay tuned for exciting news in the very near future about new benefits coming for CAMRA South Okanagan members!
